Tom Faciane's houseoat moored by the Bayou Liberty Bridge where Tom was the bridge tender for years.
Tom spent his retirement
collecting money from people launching their boats at St Genevieve's
Landing.
During Hurricane Camille, I
watched Tom ride it out on this houseboat. The surge kept him busy
retying mooring lines all night, while the water rose about three fee
over the dock.
Fortunately St
Genevieve;s Community Center, where everyone had taken refuge was high
and dry.

The Old Bayou Liberty Bridge was built in 1948, connecting the End of
the Road with St Genevieve's. Before then people used boats to cross
the bayou daily.
The bridge was opened by the
tender with a huge pipe "key" which they inserted in the center of the
bridge and cranked it by walking around, pushing turning the "key".
The bridge was one lane and cars could only cross one way at a time.
