| Bonfouca
has so much heritage, a continum that has existed for centuries.
Ranging from the original Indians, to the French, Spanish, British and
eventually American settlers, all have influenced Bonfouca. |

If Adrien had only written poems
of his beloved Bonfouca and Bayou Lacombe, his contributions would be
great. In line after line of poetry he describes a long lost time, the
soft sweet life on the bayou and his deepest thoughts on man and God.
Adrien prefered the Chacta Indians around him to the so called civilized men that he found in New England and in France. Through his poetry we see his devotion to the Chahta and God grow. Adrien was first a poet, then a priest. He became Bishop Blanc's personal secretary. He never wanted the limelight of St Louis Cathederal, and eventually became a missionary to the Indians of St Tammany Parish. Though the Church never supported his mission, he perservered nevertheless, becoming a saint to the Indians.. |

Dubuisson Cemetery is well know, its graves listed on the Internet. Every year relatives of the deceased come to clean the graves and light candles on All Saint's Day. This custom was promoted by Pere Adrian Rouquette - Chahta-Ima, the poet, priest, missionary. Many of my neighbors and friends are buried here. The latest Robert "Buddy" Madison, was an old friend from the GOSH museum. I encouraged him to write down his family history which he did. This page is dedicated to him. New is an interactive headstone gallery, also Google Earth maps of the area. |
