The Pichon Pirogue Museum

The Pichon Family has lived in Bonfouca since 1826. By farming and living off the land, the Pichons were nearly completely self-sufficient. The tools that they left behind shows the diverse and sophisticated means they used to survive.

The Pichon Pirogue Museum
     Welcome to the new, virtual Pichon Pirogue Museum!
     We have photographed the families pirogues and dozens of old tools saved from Katrina's destruction by Michael Pichon.
       Our mission is to inform and educate, and perhaps one day there will be an actual building for the museum. In the mean time, please feel free to enjoy our virtual museum.
     History       After Katrina several boxes of documents going back 200 years were discovered.

      Pirogues    Pirogues of all kinds are displayed, from cypress dugouts to a 24' racing pirogue.
      Hunting     Displayed includes the family collection of old hand carved duck decoys.
     Fishing       Handmade nets, clam drags and even a harpoon are displayed.
     Trapping     Traps, skinning boards and stretchers are on display.
     Building      Displayed are all manner of hand tools used to build buildings and boats.
     Farming       Here are the tools and implements used for farming go back over a century.

     Motors          We were looking for old motors when we made an important find.

     BLCC           History of the Bayou Liberty Civic Club, supported to this day by the Pichons.

     Books            Francois Sidione Pichon kept a diary for 38 years, detailing life of the bayou.
