Bonfouca is a very unique place, more so than one would suspect . Centered  around the Bayou Libertyy bridge and St Genieve's Church, this sleepy little village seems timeless. One can stand under the moss covered oaks and gaze out across the marsh to the lake, taking in all  the sights and smells and feel its timelessness.
Though I was raised here in Bonfouca and roamed the woods, bayous and plantations, I never knew Bonfouca at all.
Aerial Map of Bonfouca
Bonfouca is significant because of its:
  • Rich ecological diversity of upland woods, marsh, bayous and lake.
  • Ancient Indian middens dating back thousands of years
  • Historic ties to the building of New Orleans
  • Unique Creole heritage that survives today
  • Recreational fishing and boating
  • Its scenic beauty
The image above shows some of the historic sites in Bonfouca. It also shows the bayous, sloughs, marshes and woodlands. Lake Pontchartrain is just past the lower left hand corner of the image. Also pointed out are several old Indian middens.
Notice: These Indian Middens are protected by Federal Law

Though Bonfouca.Org is only a website now, in the future it can become an organization for protecting Bonfouca's ecology, historic sites and Creole heritage. In the mean time, its mission is to create an awareness of Bonfouca's unique treasures, rather than a comprehensive resource.
I have written several books including, 'The Early History of Bonfouca' and 'The
Chahta-Ima Chronicles' of  the Creole poet-priest Adrien Rouquette, who became an Indian missionary.
Also I have translated  Adrien's 'Les Savanes' and his brother Dominique Rouquette's 'Les
Meschacébéennes' from the original Creole to English.

My research is funded by publishing these books, so please visit the book section.
The reason I translated their books was to understand the poets in their own words. I discovered visions of Bonfouca from and earlier, though no less complicated time. Now these beautiful poems from a distant age are available to all.
